Buc-ee’s Opens First Virginia Travel Center on I-81
Massive travel center in Rockingham County brings jobs, snacks, and crowds to Interstate 81.

Drivers on Interstate 81 in Virginia now have a new reason to stop: Buc-ee’s has officially opened its first location in Virginia.

The massive 74,000-square-foot travel center opened June 30 just outside of Harrisonburg in Rockingham County, drawing hundreds of visitors before sunrise. Known for its clean bathrooms, brisket sandwiches, and famous “beaver nuggets,” the Texas-based chain brought its signature style—and scale—to the Old Dominion, according to ABC7.

The Virginia Buc-ee’s boasts 120 gas pumps, dozens of hot food options, and aisles packed with snacks, gifts, hunting gear, clothing, and more. Inside, Pitmaster Randy Pauly said the focus is on quality: “It’s not just the brisket details. It’s the jerky, it’s the fudge, it’s the salads; everything has a lot of details attached to every single move we make and every item we make.”

Governor Glenn Youngkin cut the ribbon at a ceremony that morning, joined by Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. (RELATED: Lt. Gov. Sears Pushes to End Car Tax, Gains Rare Support from Spanberger)

“The people, it’s so many, they’re packed in here. Everybody has a smile on their face. They’re grabbing stuff left and right. They’re just really getting a Buc-ee’s fix, and it’s just super, super gratifying,” Buc-ee’s co-founder Arch “Beaver” Aplin told 7News.

The new location also delivers an economic boost: more than 200 Virginians were hired, all earning above minimum wage with full benefits.

Whether you’re filling up your tank or grabbing a bag of sweet corn puff “beaver nuggets,” Buc-ee’s promises more than just a pit stop—it’s a full-blown experience, now available in Virginia. (RELATED: Virginia Launches Next-Gen Nuclear Reactor Project)
