A new Native American Heritage Trail has been inaugurated in King George County, offering a self-guided driving tour that delves into the history of the Rappahannock and Patawomeck tribes.
This initiative is a result of a collaboration between King George County, the University of Mary Washington Historic Preservation Department, and the Rappahannock and Patawomeck tribes.
The trail includes seven educational signs and ten geocache puzzles, strategically placed at historical sites throughout the county.
Students from the University of Mary Washington’s Historic Preservation Department, in partnership with the Rappahannock Tribe and the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia, crafted the trail signs.
The county describes the Native American Heritage Trail as a complimentary, self-guided driving tour. Interested visitors can obtain a map and guide brochure from the county’s website or collect one at the Revercomb Administration Building, located at 10459 Courthouse Drive, outside the board room.
Using the map, visitors can explore the trail signs and engage with the geocache puzzles. The brochure contains a mystery message that can be uncovered by solving all ten geocache puzzles.
Those who decipher the message will receive a prize. For visitors with limited time, each geocache puzzle also contains small treasures.
