University of Virginia Athletics announced Tyler Jones as the new general manager for football and women’s basketball on Wednesday.
Jones’ responsibilities will include leading the department’s front office efforts overseeing revenue generation channels. He will also serve as the CAP Manager for football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball.
“I am pleased to officially elevate Tyler to the role of general manager for football and women’s basketball,” Director of Athletics Carla Williams said. “Tyler has done an outstanding job navigating this changing landscape while managing our front office efforts over the last year. We’re prioritizing a sensible structure that honors our efforts to be as fiscally responsible as possible while giving us the best chance to compete for championships.”
When it comes to his leadership over football and women’s basketball, Jones will work closely with each head coach to collaborate on roster construction, talent evaluation, student athlete negotiations, resource allocation, navigating the transfer portal, and managing budgets.
As the CAP Manager, Jones will develop and manage roster budgets across several other sports along with funding components, including scholarships, revenue sharing, and other student athlete benefits. He will also be managing CAP compliance while working with the Cav Futures marketing agency and UVA’s strategic NIL partners.
“I am grateful to Dr. Williams for the opportunity to serve in this new role,” Jones said. “It’s an honor to collaborate with exceptional coaches and staff at the University of Virginia, and I look forward to working with them in building competitive rosters across multiple athletic programs.”
Prior to joining UVA in 2023, Jones was a senior athletics director at Northwestern University where he provided insights in revenue generation to various departments.
Along with Jones, UVA announced that Justin Speros would now serve as Assistant General Manager for Football. Originally joining the football program in 2021, Speros has managed the evaluation of high school student-athletes and potential players in the transfer portal.
UVA also confirmed that Scott Piolo will continue to serve in a consulting role for the department. In his 40-years of experience across football, Pioli previously helped the New England Patriots win three Super Bowls while being named a NFL Executive of the Year nominee five times.
Williams also expressed his excitement over retaining both Speros and Pioli.
“Scott has been an amazing resource and an invaluable asset,” Williams said. “Justin continues to show why he is one of the rising stars in our industry. We’re excited to formalize this team and our front office.”
