Virginia Law Enforcement Groups Demand Jay Jones Withdraw Over “Vile” Threats Against Republicans
Virginia law enforcement groups urge Jay Jones to quit after violent texts about shooting GOP lawmakers and wishing death on a colleague’s children.

Three of Virginia’s top law enforcement organizations are demanding that Democratic attorney general nominee Jay Jones drop out of the race after admitting to sending violent text messages about shooting Republican officials and wishing death on a colleague’s children.

“We will not follow an individual who has made such vile statements against citizens and the men and women in uniform who work hard every day risking their lives to combat the violence you advocate against them,” the Virginia Law Enforcement Sheriff’s Association wrote in a letter to Jones. “Sir, you need to hold yourself accountable and immediately withdraw from the Attorney General race.”

The Fraternal Order of Police of Virginia echoed that call, writing, “The calling for any type of violence is unacceptable… The men and women of law enforcement work tirelessly to combat the violence you wished on a fellow Virginian and his family.” The group called Jones “unfit for the office of Attorney General of Virginia.”

The Virginia Police Benevolent Association also urged accountability, saying, “Voters now have the full picture of Mr. Jones’ character and must weigh that information carefully as they cast their ballots. If he were to win, he should decline to take office. Leaders cannot serve effectively when their own conduct has undermined their credibility.”

The backlash follows leaked text messages Jones sent to Republican Delegate Carrie Coyner in 2022. In them, he fantasized about killing then–House Speaker Todd Gilbert, writing, “Three people, two bullets, Gilbert, Hitler, and Pol Pot. Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.”

Coyner also accused Jones of saying he hoped Gilbert’s children would die, to which Jones replied, “Yes, I’ve told you this before. Only when people feel pain personally do they move on policy.” (RELATED: Virginia Democrats Condemn Jay Jones’ Violent Texts — But No One’s Calling for Him to Drop Out)

“Jay Jones wished violence on the children of a colleague and joked about shooting Todd Gilbert. It’s disgusting and unbecoming of any public official,” Coyner said in a statement.

After the texts were published by the National Review, Jones admitted sending them, saying, “Like all people, I’ve sent text messages that I regret and I believe violent rhetoric has no place in politics.”

But instead of immediately apologizing, Jones attacked his Republican opponent Jason Miyares and former President Donald Trump—only issuing an apology to Gilbert after national backlash.

“I take full responsibility for my actions,” Jones later said.

Miyares, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, and GOP lieutenant gubernatorial candidate John Reid have all called on Jones to exit the race.

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger and lieutenant governor candidate Ghazala Hashmi have remained silent and have not asked Jones to step down. (RELATED: Miyares Urges Google to Prevent Univision From Becoming More Expensive for Virginians)
