More than four months after Mamta Bhatt, 28, disappeared, her husband Naresh Bhatt, 37, has been indicted by a Prince William County Grand jury. Naresh Bhatt faces a murder charge and a felony count of defiling a dead body.
Police found a substantial amount of blood in the bedroom and bathroom of Bhatt’s residence leading investigators to believe Naresh Bhatt dismembered his wife.
“From the beginning, we believed that she was murdered,” said Manassas Park Police Chief Mario Lugo. “I feel we have a strong case for not having the body.”
“The forensic unit of Prince William County said it was one of the worst crime scenes they’ve seen,” Lugo added.
Naresh Bhatt was already in jail awaiting trial on charges of concealing a dead body. Prosecutors allege that Naresh purchased three knives from a Walmart in Chantilly on July 30 and the next day buying cleaning supplies from another Walmart. Prosecutors allege that Naresh Bhatt’s internet search history included incriminating phrases and that he was recorded disposing of trash bags in dumpsters and trash compactors days after his wife’s disappearance.
The couple share a one-year-old daughter who has been under the care of her maternal grandparents. The family is originally from Nepal.Mamte Bhatt was a nurse who worked two days a week at a hospital. Her coworkers were the first ones to alert authorities to her disappearance. Multiple searches including grid and K-9 searches were conducted throughout the community after Mamte Bhatt was reported missing.
