As the country is still reeling from the tragic and horrifying death of beloved conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, a divisive scene emerged from the House of Representatives on Wednesday during a moment of silence for Kirk.
The moment of silence, which was held just minutes after it was reported that Kirk did not survive a gruesome assassination attempt, was presided over by Mike Johnson.
While the rare moment of unity lasted for about a minute, it was disrupted after Representative Lauren Boebert, R-Co. asked for a prayer for Kirk which prompted objections from Congressional Democrats and a shouting match.
Boebert can be heard requesting a moment of prayer for Charlie’s family, at which point one or multiple Congressional Democrats shouted ‘no’ and disorder ensued, prompting Speaker Johnson to gavel the hecklers down.
The disruption elicited outrage from Congressional Republicans, with Representative Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fl. saying that Democrats hateful rhetoric ‘caused this’.
Luna and other Congressional Republicans have written a letter to Speaker Johnson requesting that a statue of Kirk is built in the Capitol following his death.
The failure to unify after Kirk’s death was seen across the Atlantic as well, as the European Parliament refused a moment of silence for the conservative giant for procedural reasons despite requests from MEP’s.
As of Friday afternoon, it has been reported that the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination was identified and apprehended.
The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has so far refused to cooperate with investigators to give them a better understanding of his motives.
