An Egyptian national was fined and deported after pleading guilty to kicking a customs inspection dog so hard he sent the canine airborne.
Hamed Ramadan Bayoumy Aly Marie attacked Freddie the Beagle who works with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detecting smuggled agricultural productions. (RELATED: Arrest Made In Death of Norfolk Sailor).
Stationed at Washington Dulles International Airport, Freddie weighs only 25 pounds but has a nose 45 times more sensitive than his human coworkers. Freddy took an interest in Marie’s bags, flagging them for contraband when Marie kicked the canine cop with enough force that security footage showed him flying into the air.
Marie’s luggage was found to contain over 100 pounds of agricultural contraband, and he was taken into custody while Freddie was rushed to an emergency veterinarian clinic. Marie pleaded guilty to all charges and was ordered to pay $840 for Freddie’s veterinarian bills. Marie was then removed from the country and deported to Egypt. “Being caught deliberately smuggling well over one hundred pounds of undeclared and prohibited agriculture products does not give one permission to violently assault a defenseless Customs and Border Protection beagle,” said CBP Area Port Director for DC Christine Waugh. “We rely heavily on our K9 partners and Freddie was just doing his job.”
Freddie suffered contusions on the right side of his ribs.
“Kick Around and Find Out,” CBP posted sharing photographs of both Freddie and MarieCBP intercepts more than 3,500 prohibited agricultural products annually.
