On Monday, major conservative political groups wrote a letter addressed to Senate Majority Leader Thune urging action as the SAVE America Act has yet to reach the Senate floor.
The SAVE America Act was introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) at the end of January, as President Trump and the GOP look to get this codified before the midterms this fall. The bill states that individuals must provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote, and provide photo identification to vote, in federal elections.
The organizations are urging Senator Thune to “immediately put the bill on the floor.” In their letter, they also have a proviso that says if Thune tried to invoke cloture, it is a “disguised effort to kill the bill.” (RELATED: NYC Will Pay Residents to Shovel — But Only With Proper ID)
Thune, has a decision to make on how he wants the filibuster to be run for the Democrats. On table are two options, if he tries to invoke cloture, the Senate Democrats will “zombie filibuster” which will lead to inevitable death of the bill due to the lack of votes. The “zombie filibuster” does not require anyone to speak, or be present on the floor because the minority party knows that there are not enough votes to clear the 60-vote cloture threshold. The other option is to make the democrats participate in a “talking filibuster” that requires someone from the Senate be present, speaking at all times. This has drawn support from multiple politicians in the GOP corner.
President Trump went on Truth Social earlier this month stating his plan to sign an executive order laying out the legal guidelines similar to the SAVE America Act. “The Democrats refuse to vote for Voter I.D., or Citizenship. The reason is very simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections,” said Trump. Since the bill is looking to be going up against its toughest opposition yet, President Trump may sign this order soon if Senator Thune can’t get it done.
