Virginia Gets $100M in Sackler Opioid Settlement
The Commonwealth played a key role in brokering settlement that includes funding for addiction recovery and a ban on opioid marketing.

The billionaire Sackler family and Purdue Pharma have agreed to a $7.4 billion nationwide opioid settlement—sending more than $100 million to Virginia alone for addiction treatment and prevention. The deal also sets aside $800 million for victims and families devastated by the crisis.

Under the agreement the Sackler family agreed to pay out $6.5 billion with an additional $900 million from Perdue Pharma. Both the family and the drug manufacturer also agreed to end all opioid marketing nationwide.

Purdue Pharma filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2019 and again in March 2025 to help manage the numerous opioid related lawsuits. Payouts on the settlement will begin once the company has creditor support for its Chapter 11 restructuring plan. Virginia will receive over $100 million as their share of the settlement. Funds will be used to support community-based addiction prevention and treatment services. Roughly $800 million of the settlement will go to individual victims and their families.

In the past 25 years more than 850,000 Americans have died from opioid-related overdoses. Nearly 2,000 Virginians died in 2022 from fentanyl alone.  (RELATED: Illegal Immigrant Accused of Incest with Teenager Captured by ICE After Release from Virginia Jail)

“The Sacklers spent years fueling an epidemic that shattered families, wrecked communities, and cost hundreds of thousands of American lives,” said Attorney General Jason Miyares in a statement. “Though no amount of money will ever bring back those we’ve lost or undo the incomprehensible level of harm caused, these settlement funds will be invested in treatment, prevention, and recovery efforts across Virginia, helping our communities heal and saving lives.”

A hearing on the settlement payout process will be scheduled in the coming days.
