Democratic Rep. Don Beyer won a seventh term representing Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger Tony Sabio. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday evening.

Beyer campaigned on protecting federal employees, lowering household costs and expanding access to affordable health care. During his latest term, he helped reintroduce bipartisan legislation to provide federal employees with 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave, expanding existing parental leave benefits. Sabio, a military veteran who also served in the Secret Service and CIA, emphasized affordability, public safety, job opportunities and economic stability.

The Cook Political Report rated the district Solid Democratic heading into the election. The Northern Virginia district includes Arlington County, Alexandria and Falls Church, along with part of Fairfax County. First elected in 2014, Beyer secured another two-year term in Washington, keeping the heavily Democratic seat in his party’s hands.
