In 2023, Democrat Lieutenant Governor candidate Ghazala Hashmi said she doesn’t “really care” if children have access to sexually explicit content at a public education subcommittee meeting.
The Public Education meeting was held to discuss Senate bill SB1463, which would place parental warning labels on books in public and school libraries that contain sexually explicit material.
When the topic of sexually explicit material came up, Hashimi dismissed it. “We seem to focus on sexually explicit material. I don’t really care about that,” she said in the meeting.
Also in 2023, Hashmi killed a bill that would allow parents to be notified of the opportunity to opt their children out of presentations or performances by outside groups and mandate parental involvement in the crafting of library policies. “As was pointed out in testimony, our school divisions already have the authority to identify materials that may be deemed objectionable,” said Hashmi. The same state senator who says she doesn’t “really care” about children accessing sexual material, also deems schools have the authority to approve what is appropriate for almost 1.3 million Virginian children.
Hashmi has also doubled down on preventing parents’ choice, shooting down Governor Youngkins’ bill for parents’ choice between public or private schools. “I proudly defeated Governor Youngkin’s efforts to funnel public education dollars into private schools,” said Hashmi. Senator Hashmi was seen this month rallying with protestors on the back of a pick up truck, flaunting an upside down American flag. She was also seen marching with pro-palestinian protestors and abstained from the resolution adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism for hate crime evaluations.
Hashmi has recently dodged debates with GOP candidate John Reid. In the mean time, she runs TV ad smear campaigns against Reid that he calls “false.” Reid also responded by calling out Hashmi for not “caring” about children and their test scores.
