Jones Bails: Dem AG Hopeful Refuses to Face Miyares in Debate
The AG candidate waited six weeks to turn down the invitation to an in-studio debate on 7News.

Jay Jones has declined 7News’s invitation to debate Attorney General Jason Miyares.

On June 18, both candidates were invited by 7News to participate in a televised in-studio debate August 28. Both campaigns acknowledged the invitation, but Jones waited until July 30 to decline the debate.

“He doesn’t want to answer for his soft-on-crime record: 1. Ending cash bail; 2. Removing school resource officers; and 3. Allowing men in girls’ sports,” said the Republican Attorneys General Association.

“It is no surprise that Jay Jones has declined to debate Attorney General Miyares,” said Miyares Campaign Press Secretary Alex Cofield. “For one, he would actually have to attempt to prosecute and argue a case against someone, which he has never done.”

Jones campaign has not commented on the refusal.

Polling currently shows Jones leading Miyares among registered voters, but the margins tightens significantly when reduced to likely voters. Miyares is the first Cuban American to serve as Commonwealth Attorney General.

It is doubted that Abigail Spanberger and Winsome Earle-Sears will debate either.

There are less than 100 days remaining until Election Day and statewide Democrats far outpace Republicans in fundraising.
