On Wednesday, Attorney general Jason Miyares announced he was going to send a letter in an effort to prevent Youtube TV from putting popular Spanish-speaking channel Univision on a premium pay level.
For the past couple months, TelvisiaUnivision and Google/Youtube TV have been in heated negotiations for a new contract to keep Univision on Youtube TV’s basic package. Youtube TV was going to move the popular Hispanic TV channel to a more premier package.
Miyares, posted a letter on X that he sent to the Alphabet CEO amongst other C-suite members in the company, threatening the use of legal action if their new policies come under violation of various Virginia Consumer Protection Laws. Univision is claiming that Youtube and Google are making customers pay a 18% “Hispanic Tax” to receive the channel on the premium package. They also claim that Google is abusing their power, calling them out for being the only major TV company to exclude them from their base package.
“I honestly don’t know what their rationale is. The only thing I can tell you is they’re doing this at a time right around the midterm elections and the key gubernatorial elections. And they did this at a time where the Hispanic audience is no longer a party vote,” TelevisaUnivision CEO Daniel Alegre told FOX Business.
Univision pushed out a new ad campaign called “DO THE RIGHT THING GOOGLE,” calling for the tech giant “Don’t discriminate against Hispanics” in major newspapers across the country. (RELATED: Experts Say Spanberger’s Attempt to Moderate on Right to Work Doesn’t Pass the Smell Test)
“TelevisaUnivision’s demands aren’t supported by their performance on YouTube TV over the last four years. If we cannot reach a fair deal by September 30th, their programming will no longer be available on YouTube TV.,” said Youtube to Fox Business in response to Univision’s claims.
