Congressional Candidate Stewart Whitson signed the Independent Women’s Voice’s Stand With Women Commitment pledging to preserve women’s sports and single-sex spaces if elected to the US House.
“As a father to three young girl athletes, I am PROUD to join @IWF & @Riley_Gaines_ ‘Stand with Women’ movement, and I promise to always fight to protect our daughters and make sure they have the opportunities and safety they deserve,” Whitson said on X.
Whitson’s opponent, Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw has been a vocal opponent of women’s only spaces and supported pro-transgender policies throughout the county.
Walkinshaw opposed Virginia’s model and signed onto a letter asking Virginia’s Department of Education to allow male students into girls’ bathrooms.
Since President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, a number of Virginia schools have reversed policies which previously allowed male-born athletes to compete in women’s sports.
Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears has also signed the Stand With Women Commitment.
“I will never back down from protecting Virginia’s women and girls,” Earle-Sears said.
Early voting has begun in the special election to fill the seat vacated by the death of Congressman Gerry Connolly. Ballots must be postmarked by September 9th and received by noon September 12 to be counted.
