Florida State suffered its first loss of the season last Friday, during a double overtime thriller against Virginia. The Cavaliers quarterback Chandler Morris rushed in what turned out to be the game winning score on a four yard rush in the second overtime securing the 46-38 victory.
The thriller in Charlottesville was the first time Virginia was able to secure a top 10 win since 2005 where it also bested Florida State.
Despite Morris rushing in to take the late lead, the Seminoles had another opportunity to tie and play for a third extra period. But their efforts were tarnished by a dropped pass in the back of the endzone by Duce Robinson on third down. The following play, quarterback Tommy Castellanos was intercepted by Ja’son Prevard to seal the game and unleash the fans who stormed the field immediately.
The Cavaliers answered the bell in front of a crowd of 50,107 attendees – the largest at Scott Stadium this season – which was everything head coach Tony Elliot was looking for when taking over the program back in 2022.
“Man, how fun was that? Elliot said. “That’s what Scott Stadium is supposed to be like. And that’s what I envisioned when I decided to take the job here, the potential.” (RELATED: Miyares Urges Google to Prevent Univision From Becoming More Expensive for Virginians)
“Really, really proud of the students and the fans for showing up. It made a difference. It made it a very, very difficult place for a good football team to come in here to play … The atmosphere was unbelievable. It felt like a championship kind of game, and that’s what we desire to be as a program. That’s where we want to go. But we’ve all got to do it together. So I appreciate everybody for showing up and making Scott Stadium what it is, is a very difficult place for opponents.”

As chaos ensued on the field Florida State coach Mike Norvell and Virginia Tony Elliot were unable to meet after the game, something that Elliot admittedly regretted.
“I hope nobody got injured,” Elliot said. “You don’t want to see that. I hate that I didn’t get a chance to shake Coach Norvell’s hand, because I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for him and what he’s done with the program.”
No players or coaches were injured during the rush according to ESPN. (RELATED: Political Violence Surges: Two Shootings Rock U.S. in One Weekend)
Virginia jumped on Florida State early thanks to a pair of first quarter takeaways which were returned for touchdowns helping the Cavaliers out to an early 14-0 lead.
The Seminoles were able to battle back to claim a 21-14 lead but Virginia continued to lean on its ground game with running back J’Mari Taylor carrying the ball 27 times for 99 yards. As a team the Cavaliers rushed for 211 yards with Morris running in a total of three touchdowns on the ground.
Virginia has now improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC with Florida State falling to 3-1 and 0-1 in conference play.
